An antique rug is usually at least 100 years old. U.S. customs uses the same 100-year line for antiques, and most dealers follow it.
Semi-antique usually means roughly 50 to 100 years old. Vintage is the loosest term. Most sellers use it for rugs at least 20 years old, and some use it for any rug that has been used before.
None of these words is a legal standard for rug sales, so ask the seller what they mean by it and how they dated the rug.
How to judge a rug’s age
Look at the back. Older handmade rugs often show softened, slightly uneven knots and natural wear, while newer ones look crisp and uniform.
Look at the colors. Natural dyes fade gently and unevenly, which creates soft bands of color called abrash. Many early synthetic dyes faded in harsher ways or ran.
Look at the materials and the wear. Even wear across the pile, repairs done in old wool, and an oxidized, flattened pile all point to age. Chemical washes and artificial distressing can imitate some of these signs, so no single clue is proof.
Vintage-look rugs
Many new rugs are washed, sheared or overdyed to look old. They are sold as vintage-style or distressed, and some are handmade, but they are new rugs.
An overdyed rug is usually an older rug that has been stripped and dyed one strong color. The rug may be old, but its look is new.
Does age decide value?
Not by itself. Condition, quality, origin, size and natural dyes matter as much as age. A worn antique with heavy repairs can be worth less than a well-kept rug from the 1960s.
Some periods and regions are especially collectible, such as 19th century village and tribal rugs. A specialist appraiser can tell you what a particular rug is worth.
Quick answers
How old does a rug have to be to be antique?
Usually at least 100 years. That is the common trade definition and the line U.S. customs uses for antiques.
Is a vintage rug the same as a used rug?
Not always. Most sellers use vintage for rugs at least 20 years old, but some use it for any pre-owned rug. Ask how old the rug is and how they know.
Can a rug be made to look antique?
Yes. Chemical washes, shearing and sun or tea treatments can make a new rug look old. Check the back, the knots and the wear, and ask the seller directly.
