How to clean a wool rug at home
Wool is tough and naturally resists dirt. Gentle, regular care keeps it that way.

Dry grit is what wears a rug out. Vacuum a wool rug about once a week, and more in busy rooms or homes with pets.
Set the vacuum to its highest pile height, or use suction only, so a spinning brush does not pull at the fibers. Go with the direction of the pile, and never run the vacuum over the fringe. Use a hand tool there instead.
A few times a year, turn the rug over and vacuum the back. This shakes loose grit that has worked down to the base of the pile.
Deal with spills right away
Scrape up anything solid with a spoon. Then blot with a clean white cloth, pressing down without rubbing. Rubbing pushes the spill deeper and can fuzz the wool.
Dampen the spot with cool water and keep blotting until the cloth stops picking up color. Work from the outside of the spot toward the middle so it does not spread.
A gentle wash for one spot or a small rug
Test first. Dab a little cleaning solution on a hidden corner and press a white cloth to it. If any dye comes off, stop and call a rug cleaner.
Use cool water and a small amount of a detergent made for wool. Sponge it on lightly, then rinse with clean water and blot. The goal is a damp rug, never a soaked one.
Drying matters most
A wool rug that stays wet can develop mildew, odor or brown stains. Dry it fast with fans and good airflow, and make sure the back dries as well as the front.
Keep it away from radiators and strong direct sun, and wait until it is fully dry before putting the pad and furniture back.
What to avoid
Skip bleach, ammonia, strong household cleaners and ordinary laundry detergent. They can strip natural oils from wool and make dyes run.
Do not use hot water or a steam cleaner on a wool rug, and never put a large wool rug in a washing machine.
When to call a professional
Most wool rugs benefit from a full professional wash every year or two, sooner in heavy traffic. Call a rug cleaner, rather than a carpet cleaner, for color bleeding, deep stains, pet urine, water damage or any rug that is valuable or old.
Quick answers
Can I steam clean a wool rug?
It is not recommended. Heat and heavy moisture can shrink wool, set stains and make dyes bleed. A cool, damp clean or a professional wash is safer.
How often should a wool rug be cleaned?
Vacuum about once a week. A full professional wash every year or two suits most homes, and more often in busy rooms or with pets.
Is baking soda safe on a wool rug?
Used dry, it can help absorb odors and oily spills. Sprinkle it, leave it for a while, then vacuum it out completely.
Why does my wool rug shed?
New wool rugs shed loose fibers left over from making them. It slows down over the first months with regular vacuuming.
