Sun fading and rotating a rug

Sunlight fades every rug in time. Rotating it keeps the change even.

Why rugs fade

Ultraviolet light breaks down dyes. Both natural and synthetic dyes fade, though some colors hold up better than others. Reds and blues often change first.

A rug in a sunny room fades unevenly. The part near the window lightens while the part under a sofa stays dark. That uneven look is the real problem, not the fading itself.

Is it sun or wear?

Fold back a small section of the rug and look at the pile. If the tips are lighter than the base of the knots, the rug is sun faded. If the pile is thin or the knots show, that is wear.

Compare the front to the back as well. The back gets no light, so it shows close to the original color.

Rotate the rug

Turn the rug 180 degrees every six months. In a very sunny or busy room, do it every three months.

Rotation evens out both light and foot traffic, so one end does not wear or fade faster than the other. It is also a good moment to vacuum the floor under the rug.

Block the light

Close blinds or curtains during the hours when the sun falls on the rug. Sheer curtains help less than you might think.

Clear UV-blocking window film cuts most of the ultraviolet light while leaving the view. Many newer low-E windows filter UV as well. Neither stops fading entirely, since visible light also fades dyes over time.

Can faded color be restored?

Not fully. A professional wash often brightens a rug that looks faded but is really dull from dirt.

Some restorers can re-tint worn or faded areas by hand. Ask how the color holds up to washing, and avoid markers or home dyes, which can bleed the first time the rug gets wet.

Quick answers

How often should I rotate a rug?

Every six months for most rooms, and every three months in a sunny or high-traffic spot.

Should I flip my rug over?

Only if it is made to be used on both sides, such as many flatweaves and kilims. A pile rug should stay pile side up.

Do some rugs fade on purpose?

Yes. Some new rugs are washed or treated to soften their colors so they look older. That look is part of the design, not damage.
