What size rug pad do I need?
The pad should be a little smaller than the rug so it stays hidden and the edges lie flat.

Cut the pad about 1 inch shorter than the rug on every side. That makes the pad about 2 inches shorter than the rug in each direction.
For an 8 by 10 foot rug, that means a pad of about 7 feet 10 inches by 9 feet 10 inches.
Why smaller is better
A pad that reaches the edge shows at the sides and lifts the border, which can catch a foot. Leaving an inch lets the rug’s edges taper down to the floor.
Measure the rug, not the label
Handmade rugs are rarely the exact size on the label. Measure the length and width of the rug itself, without the fringe, before you order or cut a pad.
Runners and round rugs
The same 1 inch rule works for runners. For a round rug, cut a circle about 2 inches smaller across than the rug.
Trimming a pad at home
Lay the rug face down, place the pad on top and mark a line about 1 inch in from the rug’s edge. Cut with sharp scissors or a utility knife. Many shops will also cut a pad to size for you.
Quick answers
Should a rug pad be the same size as the rug?
No. Make it about 1 inch shorter on every side so it stays hidden and the rug’s edges lie flat.
Do I measure the fringe?
No. Measure the body of the rug only and size the pad from that.
What if my rug is an odd size?
Buy the next pad size up and trim it, or order a pad cut to your rug’s measured size.
