Rug pads for carpet

An area rug on wall-to-wall carpet tends to drift and wrinkle. The right pad stops that.

Why rugs move on carpet

Carpet pile leans in one direction. Every step pushes the rug a little along that lean, so over weeks the rug creeps across the room and bunches against furniture.

A soft rug on soft carpet also flexes as people walk on it. That flexing is what causes ripples and wrinkles.

What works

Use a pad made for rug-on-carpet use. These are firm, fairly thin pads that hold to the carpet and give the rug a stiff base, so it stops flexing and stays put.

A dense felt pad also helps on low-pile carpet. It adds body under the rug and cuts down on wrinkling.

What does not work

Rubber pads and waffle grips made for hard floors need a smooth surface to grip. On carpet they have nothing to hold, so the rug keeps moving. Thick, soft pads can make the problem worse by adding more bounce.

Sizing the pad

Cut the pad slightly smaller than the rug so its edges stay hidden and the rug’s edges lie flat on the carpet. The size guide linked below explains how much to trim.

When a pad is not enough

On deep shag or very plush carpet, even a good pad may not stop all movement. Anchoring the rug under the front legs of a sofa or bed helps, and so does a larger rug that more furniture sits on.

Quick answers

Do I need a rug pad on carpet?

Usually, yes. Without one, most area rugs drift and wrinkle on carpet. A pad made for carpet holds the rug flat and in place.

Can I use a rubber rug pad on carpet?

Rubber pads made for hard floors do not grip carpet. Choose a pad sold for rug-on-carpet use instead.

Will a rug pad damage my carpet?

A pad made for carpet should not. Lift the rug now and then and vacuum the carpet underneath so dirt does not build up.
