Felt vs rubber rug pads

Felt gives cushion. Rubber gives grip. Which one you need depends on the rug, the room and the floor.

The short answer

Choose rubber when the rug is small or light and could slide. Choose felt when the rug is large and held down by furniture and you want a softer feel. Choose felt bonded to rubber when you want both, which is the case for most rugs on hard floors.

Cushion

Felt is soft and springy. It makes a rug feel thicker underfoot and takes some of the wear off the rug’s back. A thin rubber pad adds almost no cushion.

Grip

Natural rubber holds both the floor and the rug, so it stops slipping on wood, tile and stone. Plain felt has little grip on a hard floor and depends on the rug’s weight and furniture to stay put.

Height

Rubber pads are thin, which matters in entries and kitchens where a door has to swing over the rug. Felt and felt-and-rubber pads are thicker. Check door clearance before you choose.

Matching the pad to the room

Runners, kitchen rugs and small rugs by a door need grip, so use rubber. Living room and bedroom rugs under furniture do well on felt or felt-and-rubber. On wall-to-wall carpet, neither plain felt nor hard-floor rubber works well; use a pad made for carpet.

Quick answers

Is felt or rubber better for hardwood floors?

Both are safe on finished wood if the rubber is natural rubber, not PVC. Felt bonded to natural rubber is the most common choice because it cushions and grips.

Which pad stops a rug slipping best?

Natural rubber. A felt-and-rubber pad grips nearly as well and adds cushion.

Does a thicker pad make a rug last longer?

A cushioned pad reduces the grinding between rug and floor that wears a rug down. Very thick pads can make a rug harder to walk on and trip over, so stay with a moderate thickness.
