Rug pads for vinyl floors
Vinyl is easy to stain from below. The pad matters more than the rug.

Vinyl sheet, vinyl tile and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) are made of plastic. Some rubber, latex and PVC pads and rug backings contain chemicals that react with vinyl over time.
The damage shows as yellow or brown patches, a faint print of the pad’s grid, or a soft, tacky surface. It often appears only when the rug is lifted months later, and it usually cannot be cleaned off.
Check your floor first
Many vinyl floor makers warn against rubber- or latex-backed mats in their care guides. Look up the care guide for your floor, or ask the store that installed it. It tells you what the maker will accept.
Pads that are safe on vinyl
Felt with no rubber is the safest choice. It cushions the rug and protects the floor, but it does little to stop a light rug from sliding.
For grip, choose a felt pad with a backing its maker labels as safe for vinyl or LVP. Avoid cheap waffle-grid pads and pads with no label at all, since you cannot tell what they are made of.
Skip rugs with a latex or rubber back of their own. Most handmade rugs have no backing, which makes them a good fit for vinyl floors.
Keep it dry underneath
Water trapped under a pad can cloud vinyl and, on plank floors, seep into the seams. Wipe up spills right away and let a damp rug dry fully before you put it back down.
Lift the rug and pad every few months, wipe the floor and let it breathe. It is also a good time to check for any change in color.
Quick answers
Can I use a rubber rug pad on luxury vinyl plank?
Only if its maker says it is safe for vinyl. Many rubber and latex pads can stain or yellow LVP over time. Felt, or felt with a vinyl-safe backing, is the safer choice.
Will a rug discolor my vinyl floor?
A rug with no backing on a vinyl-safe pad should not. The risk comes from rubber, latex or PVC backings and pads, and from moisture trapped underneath.
What size pad should I buy?
Most pads are cut about one inch shorter than the rug on each side, so the pad does not show at the edges. Our pad size guide explains how to measure.
